Christmas celebrations usually include decorations, such as a Christmas tree, a nativity scene, wreaths, garlands, etc. And don’t forget the lights!
At Christmas many people put lights on their Christmas tree, lights on their house, lights on their bushes outside, or even lights on their sidewalk.
It’s fun to see lights in so many places. But what they point us to is the baby who came as the Light of the world.
In Isaiah’s prophecy of the coming Messiah, he wrote:
“The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them.” –Isaiah 9:2
When the angels announced Jesus’ birth to the shepherds, the blazing light of the glory of God shone around them.
“And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” –Luke 2:9-11
And after Jesus was born, Simeon saw him in the temple as a baby and said:
“Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A Light of revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.” –Luke 2:29-32
This Christmas, if you’re going through a hard time, or you know others who are walking through dark valleys, we hope you’ll find comfort in remembering that Jesus is your Light. He spoke light into existence, because He is the Light. And He came to earth to overcome the darkness and bring us into His glorious light.
“For God, who said, ‘Light shall shine out of darkness,’ is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.” –2 Corinthians 4:6
